Air Force athletics announced its 13th class for induction into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame. The class of four-time boxing national champion Mike Benza, tennis All-American Shannon Buck, women's cross country and track All-American Hannah Everson, NCAA wrestling All-American and national runner-up Kevin Hoy, volleyball All-American and former coach Barb Martin and legendary boxing coach Eddie Weichers will be honored Friday, Oct. 16, at the East Club presented by L3Harris at the Kucera Legacy Center. The class will also be recognized at the Air Force football game vs. UNLV the following day.
Benza was a four-time Wing Open champion and NCBA national champion at 139 pounds. He earned All-America honors all four years and was inducted into the program's ring of honor in 2025 in the inaugural class. Benza flew over 250 missions during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in support of special operations forces.
Buck is the only men's tennis player to participate in two NCAA tournaments, playing singles in 2003 and 2005. He earned the highest ITA national ranking of #11 in January of 2026. The only four-time most valuable player in program history, Buck is a two-time Mountain West player of the year (2003, 2006). He holds the program record with 83 career wins at No. 1 singles, posting a 92.2 winning percentage (83-7).
Everson is the first Falcon in program history to earn All-America honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in the same season, earning the triple in 2015-16. A three-time All-America selection, Everson finished third in the 10,000-meter run at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She is a three-time team cross country most valuable player and two-time track MVP. Everson also won the NCAA Mountain Region championship, a first in program history.
Hoy was a two-time All-America honoree and was the NCAA heavyweight runner-up in 2003. A four-time all-Academy champion, Hoy earned outstanding wrestler honors in 2003. He holds the Academy record in career victories with 160 and set a single season record with 46 wins in 2001-02. He earned male athlete of the year honors from the Academy in 2003. He retired from active duty in the Air Force in 2024.
Martin was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time team most valuable player. She was named the Continental Divide Conference player of the year in 1984 and was a three-time USVBA all-region selection. Martin won the 1986 Olympia Award for collegiate volleyball and was a three-time all-conference selection. She returned to the Academy to serve as head coach from 1993-95, accumulating a 61-47 record.
Weichers served as head boxing coach from 1976-2014, leading the Academy to 19 NCBA national championships. Air Force finished either first or second in 31 of the last 34 NCBA championships he coached in. His boxers earned 113 individual NCBA titles and 325 All-America honors. Weichers captured the Western Regional title in 34 of the last 35 years. He also served as an instructor in the physical education department at Air Force throughout his tenure. The boxing gym was named in his honor in 2026.
