Air Force Sweeps Saturday Games To Go 4-0 At Fullerton Tournament

Air Force men's water polo won both of its games Saturday at the Fullerton Tournament on the Cal State Fullerton campus in Fullerton, Calif. The Falcons defeated host Cal State Fullerton, 17-11, and rallied to defeat Concordia-Irvine 19-17 in double-overtime to complete a 4-0 weekend at the tournament. Air Force has now won seven straight and improves to 11-3 on the season.

In the morning game vs. host CSUF, the Falcons held an early lead and pulled away in the second half. Air Force went up 5-3 after the first quarter and led 8-6 at halftime. A 5-3 scoring advantage in third third quarter pushed the lead to 13-9. The Falcons pulled away with a 4-2 scoring advantage in the fourth.

Senior Tom Leggett had a 12-point game, scoring nine goals and dishing out three assists. Senior Jack Richards added five goals and three assists for eight points. Senior Jonah Vander Veen contributed four assists.

Freshman Wyatt Sturgeon recorded 11 saves in goal for the win.

In the afternoon game, the Falcons needed a late goal to send the game into overtime and then proceeded to overtake CUI for the win.

Trailing by one, Leggett got the equalizer with 58 seconds remaining in regulation. The Falcons survived a last-second shot attempt by CUI, that hit the post as time expired in regulation.

In overtime, Air Force got goals from Richards and freshman Sam Storrs, while the defense held the Eagles scoreless in both overtimes.

Leggett led the Falcons with 10 points on five goals and five assists. Richards had a game-high six goals, with two assists, good for eight points. Vander Veen added six points with three goals and three assists.

Sturgeon had 12 saves in goal for his fourth win of the weekend.

Air Force is off from competition next weekend. They return to action Sept. 24, hosting Navy and then the Rare Air Challenge Sept. 26-27, all at the Academy.
