For the third time in four years the Academy's men's team will make the trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championship, Nov. 24. The Falcons finished third in the Mountain Region Championship on Saturday, earning an at-large berth to the NCAAs. The Air Force women finished 14th in the women's 6,000-meter race. All-region honors went to C2C (Jr.) Brian Dumm, C1C (Sr.) Ben Payne, C3C (So.) Mark Walter and C1C Chris Acs. The University of Colorado and Northern Arizona have an automatic berth to the NCAA meet. Colorado (69) won the Mountain Region title followed by NAU (83). Brigham Young won the women's race, scoring 34 points followed by Colorado (67).
"I'm pleased with our results. Both teams have been competing very well all year. Going into this race, our men had enough at-large points to advance to the NCAA meet," Head coach Mark Stanforth said. "Our number one objective today was to finish in the top five. The trip to the NCAA championship will be our third in four years."
Third is the Academy's highest regional finish in 11 years. The Falcons scored 93 points, nine less than the Cougars, who finished fourth (102) in the men's race, the CSU Rams followed with 104. This is the second time this year Air Force finished ahead of BYU when Air Force won the Mountain West Conference title, Nov. 8.
"Finishing third in the region, qualifing for the NCAAs and winning the Mountain West title makes 2003 our best season in four years," Stanforth said.
After finishing sixth in 2002, Stanforth had expected the Falcon women to equal that finish. On Saturday, however, the women scored 329 points, finishing 14th ahead of Utah (373) and Idaho State (446). C1C Anne Chumlea led the Falcons with a time of 22 minutes, 56 seconds while finishing 50th among 114 runners. Stanforth new going into the race that it would be tough, but the Falcons were going to give it a shot.
