Liz Jarnigan has been named associate athletic director/senior woman administrator for Air Force athletics, according to an announcement today from Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton. Jarnigan comes to the Academy from San Jose State where she has been since 2008.
Jarnigan will be a member of the athletic department's senior leadership team and will a primary advisor and liaison to the athletic director on all matters concerning intercollegiate women's programs as it relates to equity and gender issues. She will also have sports supervision responsibilities for both men's and women's programs. She will begin her duties in June 2016.
"I'm very excited to add someone of Liz's experience and professionalism to our team at the Academy," Air Force Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "She is a proven leader that brings a unique wealth of knowledge to Air Force athletics. Our cadet-athletes, as well as our coaches and staff will benefit greatly from Liz. We can't wait for her arrival in June."
Jarnigan was originally named the director for student-athlete success services at San Jose State in 2008 and promoted to associate athletic director for student services in June 2009. In April 2010, Jarnigan added the responsibilities of senior woman administrator.
Her responsibilities included serving as sports supervisor for women's volleyball and softball and overseeing compliance, academics, student services, life skills, student-athlete advising and tutoring and the assignment of learning specialists.
Prior to her time at San Jose State, Jarnigan was the coordinator of student services (2001-06) and an associate athletic director for student services (2007-08) at the University of Tulsa. In 2003 and 2004, she was honored locally with the Tulsa Area Girls and Women in Sports Role Model Award.
Her career in athletics administration began at Briar Cliff College where she was an assistant athletic director (1994-96) and interim director of athletics (1996). The 1987 graduate cum laude of St. Olaf College was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball. She received her master's degree in athletic administration from Fort Hays State University in 1988.
Jarnigan has high school and college teaching and coaching experiences in Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas. She was the women's volleyball head coach at Bethel College (1989-94), Briar Cliff College (1994-96) and Carleton College (1996-99). Her 1992 Bethel College was a conference champion and she was named the conference coach of the year for the team's accomplishment.
One half of a coaching family, her husband, Jeff Jarnigan, is a professional football coach with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. The Jarnigans are the parents of three children, Mary, Jack and Emily.
