Before coming to the Academy, he was the interim executive officer at USA Shooting, Director of Operations, and National Rifle Coach. Johnson was USA Shooting’s National Rifle Team Coach from 2002 to 2012. During that time, he helped the team to earn five Olympic medals in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games, along with several open and junior World Championship titles.
Johnson began shooting in 1972 at the Langley Junior Rifle Club in Virginia, and continued behind the firing line through his high school graduation in 1982. Johnson has a bachelor of science degree in business/finance from WVU and an MBA (project management concentration) from Colorado Technical University.
After graduation, Johnson was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Infantry Officer. His military career included a two-year assignment to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and as a coach in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.
As assistant coach, he brings a multitude of experience as an athlete and coach with him as he enters his second season with the Falcons. During Johnson’s career as a rifle athlete, he was a multiple Pan American Games and World Cup medalist, a USA National Champion, and 1983 NCAA Individual Champion. Johnson helped lead his WVU Rifle Team to three National Championships. He was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team, finishing 11th in air rifle and 21st in three-position rifle.
Johnson’s first full-time coaching assignment was as head coach of University of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2000 to 2002, where he led the team to three individual and two NCAA Team titles.
