Dr. Matt McGahey was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Revenue Officer in July 2026. In this capacity, Dr. McGahey continues to oversee all external operations and revenue generating functions for Air Force Athletics; including development, ticket sales, ticket operations, marketing, creative services, and he serves as the department’s multimedia rights liaison with Learfield and Air Force Sports Properties. Dr. McGahey leads the development of externally focused strategic initiatives and the identification and implementation of new revenue streams and various elements of large external events hosted by the Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation (AFAAC) at the Air Force Academy, including PBR’s Space Cowboys and Bruno Mars concerts hosted in 2026.
Since Dr. McGahey’s arrival in August 2022, the AFAAC has experienced four consecutive years of record-breaking revenue generation; including all-time highs in ticket sales, philanthropic contributions, and corporate partnership investment, resulting in an increase in AFAAC revenues by over 40%. He played a key role in various areas of construction and premium seating elements of the Kucera Legacy Center and the collaboration with Air Force Sports Properties on L3 Harris’ title sponsorship of the East Club at the Kucera Legacy Center, USAA’s expanded partnership to include jersey patches and field logos, and Northrup Grumman’s helmet branding sponsorship, among others. Since 2022, Air Force Athletics earned media and digital brand engagement has grown exponentially, with a 94% increase in advertising value equivalency and a 97% increase in reach.
Prior to his arrival in Colorado Springs, Dr. McGahey worked at East Tennessee State University from 2009-2022, most recently serving as the Deputy Athletic Director. Dr. McGahey led ETSU’s external operations team and oversaw the areas of development, marketing, ticketing, communications, fan experience, the Buccaneer Sports Network and was the sport administrator for multiple athletic programs. Dr. McGahey was instrumental in launching the return of ETSU’s football program, the construction of William B. Green Jr. Stadium, and developing ETSU’s multi-media rights partnership with Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment. During his time at ETSU, the athletic department experienced record setting revenue generation and FCS leading attendance.
Dr. McGahey played baseball at Virginia Tech and ETSU. He is a three-time graduate of ETSU, earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, master’s degree in sport management, and Doctor of Education degree in global sport leadership. Dr. McGahey is a member of the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region Metropolitan Board of Directors and is an adjunct faculty member for ETSU’s global sport leadership doctoral program.
Matt is a native of Johnson City, Tennessee. He and his wife, Jessica, have two sons, Nolan and Walker.
