Matt Johnson joined the Air Force athletic training staff in August of 2024. He is currently responsible for the USAFA wrestling program.
Originally from Enfield, CT, Johnson graduated from Springfield College in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in athletic training. Following Springfield College, he served as the athletic trainer for the Women’s Volleyball and Men’s/Women’s wrestling programs at Greensboro College for a year.
Johnson would go on to continue his athletic training education by completing the New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute Athletic Training Residency which specializes in diagnosing and treating general medicine pathologies. While completing the NHMI residency he completed research on proper concussion documentation practices while also working as an outreach athletic trainer for the Safe Sports Network.
Johnson would go on and graduate in 2024 with his Master of Arts in Athletic Training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While completing his master’s he completed his master’s thesis examining shoulder injury prevention program in collegiate wrestlers. During his time at UNC-Chapel Hill, Johnson also worked as graduate assistant athletic trainer working with the UNC wrestling team along with over 50 different club sports teams.
On top of his previous education and work within Athletic Training he has also been involved as a volunteer athletic trainer for both Maccabi USA and USA wrestling along with serving in leadership roles for several state athletic training organizations. He currently holds his BOC certification, Colorado State Athletic training license, and CSCS certification.
Johnson currently resides in Colorado Springs, and he enjoys outdoor activities including hiking and skiing.
