Mr. Scott R. Nelson is the Assistant Athletic Director/Director, Physical Education Division at the United States Air Force Academy. Mr. Nelson is responsible for all aspects of PE instruction, curriculum, instructional programming/development, and faculty oversight for a program encompassing 24 courses supported by over 90 faculty teaching up to 550 sections per year. He is an assistant professor of PE with over 20 years of teaching experience, primarily in lifetime and aquatics subject areas.
A retired USAF veteran with 39 continual years of USAF service, he entered the Air Force via the Delayed Enlistment Program in 1979 and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving as an enlisted weather specialist. In 1984 he earned an appointment to the USAF Academy where he was commissioned a 2Lt in the Class of 1988. As an active duty officer, he served tours as the Command Weather Briefer to the CINC-PACAF, Hickam AFB, HI, the Executive Officer, Directorate of Athletics and Aide-de-Camp to the Superintendent, USAF Academy, CO, and as a US Military Observer to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in the Middle East. He retired from active duty in 2009. He has a decade of NCAA volleyball coaching experience in Division I and II levels, and has coached Junior Olympic volleyball for 15 years. Mr. Nelson holds BS degrees from the USAF Academy and Texas A&M, and an MBA from Chaminade University, and is a graduate from USAF Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College.
With over 25 years of USAFA institutional experience, he has been involved with countless institutional efforts, to include Academic, Military and Physical Education Review Committees, the charter USAFA Institutional Outcomes Development Committee, the Integrated Curriculum Review Committee, the Commissioning Education & Training Committee and the USAFA HLC Accreditation Executive Committee.
