Air Force and Navy boxers fought to a 6-6 draw in a 12-match card Friday night at McDonough Hall. It was the first boxing competition of the season for both service academies.
One of the best bouts of the night came in the 150-pound division with Air Force's Vaughn Brazil defeating Steve Cobos, a defending National Collegiate Boxing Association champion.
"Vaughn was well prepared for this match up," said boxing coach Eddie Weichers Jr. "He fought a smart fight and countered well throughout the bout."
"It was obvious that all of our boxers were in much better shape than the Mids. Not one of our guys got as much as a bloody nose or a standing eight count the entire night," Weichers said.
Other Air Force winners included Jeb Fredrickson (130-pounds) over Aaron Burciaga, Ulysses Linares (152-pounds) over Bobby Villanueva, Jake Hostetler (162-pounds) over Gabriel Hahn, Thomas Parker (151-pounds) over Tyra Johnson, and Joe Harding (165-pounds) over Nick Sidiropoulos.
Navy's winners were Adam Mallo (132-pounds) over Eamon Murray, Mike Reel (141-pounds) over Luis Palacios, Ryan O'Connell (162-pounds) over Frankie Woods, Rick Weil (165-pounds) over Clell Knight, Kevin O'Donnell (165-pounds) over Leif Nordhagen, Ben Zuber (190-pounds) over Chris Hart.
The boxing team's home match scheduled against Nevada, UNLV and California on Oct. 27 has been cancelled due to heighten security at the Academy. Weichers said he is hopeful that a match against Nevada on that same date can be scheduled in Reno.
