That's right! The weekend of March 1-3, 2002 will honor Eddie as the Academy's head boxing coach the past 25 years-the only coach boxing coach in school history. The cornerstone of the weekend is the Wing Open Championship scheduled for Saturday afternoon will be just one of the highlights of the weekend. Headquarters for the festive three-days is beautiful Wyndham Colorado Springs, 5580 Tech Center Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80919.
The Wyndham is offering a great room rate of $65 per night for your stay. The weekend begins with Friday Night Fights. On Saturday, the Open is set for 2 p.m. in Clune Arena. About Eddie...
Eddie Weichers began his coaching career at the United States Air Force Academy in 1976 after spending two years as an assistant boxing coach at his alma mater, West Chester University in Philadelphia, PA. His legendary career has produced 198 All-American boxers and 79 individual national champions. In his first year of intercollegiate competition in 1980 his Fighting Falcons became the first team in school history to garner a National Collegiate Championship. Since that first year his teams have added fourteen additional National Championships and finished runner-up seven times. In the past twenty-two years his teams have never finshed lower than second in the nation--an astounding accomplishment!
His boxing career, as both a competitor and coach, spans the collegiate, national, international and professional levels. As a collegian, he won the 190-pound championship for West Chester University in 1973. Weichers has conducted coaching seminars in Australia, Guatemala, Central America, New Zealand, Jamaica, Tahiti and Granada. While working as a boxing clinician for the Olympic Solidarity Boxing Program, he was selected to coach the 1984 Australian Olympic Boxing team, which competed in the 1984 games in Los Angeles. He also served as trainer and coach for Australia's professional world champions Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding.
Weichers is quick to admit his first love and passion has always been collegiate boxing. He has served as president and vice-president of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA). Originally from New Orleans, LA, Weichers has a bachelors of science degree in health and physical education from West Chester and a master in arts and sports sciences from the University of Denver. He is currently an associate professor in the physical education department. He is married to the former Sheri L. Bunce of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
