Boxing team captain Dustin Brown captured Boxer Of The Week honors Friday, January 11, by stopping Brian Trumble in the first round. The bout was one of 16 as the cadets renewed their workouts in preparation for the Wing Open Championship scheduled for March 2 at 2 p.m. in the Cadet Field House.
Brown used quick hand and foot speed to land a hard right early in the round that prompted the referee to give Trumble a standing eight count. Trumble recovered and tried to use his long jab to keep Brown at a distance. But Brown, a defending national champion in the 195-pound weight division, landed a second hard right for another standing eight count. He then came back with a left hook to end the bout.
"This was a tough week of preparation for the Wing Open hopefuls," said head coach Eddie Weichers, Jr. "We started practice on January 4th after the holidays. It was evident that the serious contenders for Wing Open slots dug in and got their 'game faces' on."
"Most of the boxers were a little rusty after the layoff, but it was very evident that the desire was present in all of them."
The next Friday night bouts are scheduled for Jan. 18th beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the upper boxing room in the cadet gym.
