Falcons drop pair of MWC matches

The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a pair of Mountain West Conference matches in Utah this weekend. The Falcons fell to BYU, 6-1, on Saturday, then lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Utah on Sunday.
BYU, the defending MWC champion, won five of six singles matches, and two of the three doubles matches. Brooke Parsons, ranked No. 29 in the Midwest Region, captured the only singles match for Air Force, defeating BYU's Lindsay Ferrell, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 1 position.
Junior Heather Shelby and sophomore Gina Black combined to win the No. 2 doubles match for Air Force, beating Lu Oswald and Lia Khoudoiarova, 8-3.
Against Utah on Sunday, Air Force got out to a good start, winning two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Parsons and sophomore Laura Nigro won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Shelby and Black prevailed 8-6 at the No. 2 slot.
In singles action, the Nos. 2 and 3 matches went to three sets. Shelby defeated Irini Kotoglou, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 2, but Nigro fell to Utah's Ellen Svensson, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 in the deciding match at No. 3. Parsons won the only other singles match for the Falcons, defeating Linn Ronnberg, 6-2, 7-5.
Air Force, 3-2, plays its fourth road match in as many days on Monday, Jan. 21 against Utah State in Logan, Utah, beginning at noon.
