Several fencers moved up in the U.S. Fencing ratings last weekend at the North American Cup Division II and III competitions in Orlando, Fla. Andrea Rix, from Grand Junction, Colo., moved from an E rating to a C after finishing third in the women's sabre competition. Elia Burrill also moved up in ratings from a C to a B after finishing third among 64 women's epee fencers. Rix and Burrill both were awarded bronze medals for their third-place finishes.
"We had a strong performance and we achieved some of our goals," C1C Burrill said. "Rix' performance in Orlando qualified her for the NAC Division I competition. I also improved my rating," she said.
"It's about time," commented Salem.
"One of our goals in Orlando was to see Curtis Marshall improve his rating," Salem said. "We did not accomplish that goal."
Marshall missed improving his rating from D to C after only finishing in 10th place in the men's epee. Marshall missed his C rating after losing to three left-handed fencers.
According to Salem, one of Marshall's problems is that he has a difficult time fencing against the left-handed opponent. "He needs to work on his skills to deal with a left-handed opponent, said Salem.
The Falcons' next competition is the Santa Fe Open in New Mexico on Oct. 26-27.
