The Air Force volleyball team fought valiantly against nationally-ranked Utah, but lost a conference match 3-0 (27-30, 25-30, 22-30). The Falcons had a chance to win every game, but the No. 22-ranked Utes were used solid hitting to keep the Falcons winless in the three-game set.
The Falcons opened the match strong, keeping pace with the Utes throughout game one. They took an 18-15 lead, but Utah made some solid plays to overcome the three-point deficit and take the lead permanently at 20-19. Air Force played well in games two and three as well, but Utah used a .531 hitting percentage in game two and a .357 percentage in game three to get the three game sweep.
Delavane Diaz notched a team-high 15 kills in the loss. Lamecca Jefferson added eight kills and Brittany Edmonds notched six. Edmonds led the team with eight digs, followed by Jaime Beatty with seven. Kristin Huitt had 35 assists.
Kim Turner led all hitters with 16 kills. Sylva Strzinkova and Sabine Schulz each had nine kills for the Utes. Jackie Morrill had 11 digs and Kelsie Kartchner had 41 assists.
The Falcons had nine team blocks to the Utes' five. The teams combined for 25 service aces (AF 12, Utah 13). Air Force finished the game hitting just 18.2 percent (39k-21e-99a).
Air Force (8-16 overall, 2-7 Mountain West) will have little rest before hosting BYU. The Falcons take on the Cougars on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the East Gymnasium.
