Air Force's six-game winning streak, the second longest in 10 years, came to an end as Arkansas defeated the Falcons, 18-1, in the first round of the Texas-Arlington/Dallas Morning News Invitational, Friday, Feb. 15, in Arlington, Texas.
Arkansas, 3-0 this season, pounded out 19 hits and broke open a close game with 11 runs in two innings late in the game. The Razorbacks hit a solo home run off of Falcon starter Matt Kaercher in the first and built a 5-0 lead in the fifth.
The Falcons, 6-2 this season, got on the board in the top of the sixth when Adam Howes doubled and then scored on Dan Petro's sacrifice fly. That was as close as the Falcons would get. Arkansas scored six in the bottom of the sixth and five in the seventh for a 16-1 lead. Meanwhile, the Razorback bullpen held the Falcons to just one hit and no runs over the last 4.1 innings.
Howes, the junior first baseman from Phoenix, Ariz., had two of the Falcons' seven hits, including AFA's only extra-base hit.
Kaercher was handed his second loss of the season as he went five innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts. The Falcon bullpen didn't fare much better, giving up eight runs on 10 hits in the final three innings.
Air Force faces Texas-Arlington, a 5-4 winner over Southwest Missouri State Friday, Saturday at 3 p.m. CST. The tournament concludes on Sunday, Feb. 17, when the Falcons face SMSU at 11:30 a.m.
