Let the qualifying begin!
The Wing Open preliminaries concluded Wednesday, Feb. 6th with seven boxers advancing.
"All of the matches were hotly contested and seven freshmen made their first appearance in the Wing Open," said boxing coach Eddie Weichers. "The class of 2005 is loaded with talent. All of the boxers displayed excellent skills and all of the decisions were very close."
The Boxer of the Week award was given to Rene Prieto from Cadet Squadron 25. Prieto went against Tom Armstrong in a 156-pound fight. Armstrong was giving up six-inches in height and lots of reach to Prieto. Prieto used a snapping jab and great lateral movement to score on Armstrong. He also used an occassional left lead to catch Armstrong as he tried to narrow the distance between Prieto's punches.
Prieto is a tall, rangy, lefty that moves well and has great ring presence, according to Weichers. He stays off the ropes and frustrates opponents with his long reach.
The quarterfinals are scheduled for Feb 14 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the upper boxing room. Four Wing Open finalists from last year are scheduled to box during the 15-bout card.
