Air Force fencer C2C Weston Kelsey earned first team NCAA All-American honors in men's epee at the NCAA Fencing Championships last week. Kelsey's third-place performance also earned him a bronze medal. The team of Kelsey, C2Cs Elia Burrill, Andrea Rix and C4C Ryan Dunn placed 15th overall. The championship was held at Drew University in Madison, N.J.
"Kelsey only made two mistakes which cost him two points," head coach Abdel Salem said. According to Salem, his losses came against a fencer from St. John's when Kelsey tried to go for a toe shot against his opponent. The other mistake was an attempt at a hard thrush, which cost him the two points.
Burrill finished 16th in the women's epee. She is currently ranked 22nd in the nation. Rix finished 23rd in women's sabre in only her first time as an NCAA qualifier in her career. Dunn finished 14th in the men's foil. Dunn is currently ranked 47th in the nation.
"Burrill fenced against some tough competitors and did well. For her first time as an NCAA qualifier, Rix did well and I expect a vast improvement next season. Dunn competed well even with an ankle injury," Salem continued.
The team will have a few weeks off to study and practice before the North American Cup Division I Nationals, April 26-28, in Lewisville, KY.
