No. 16 UNLV outlasts Air Force, 4-3

Air Force gave No. 16 UNLV all it could handle Saturday but fell short, 4-3, to the Rebels in a women's tennis match played at the Academy. It was the fourth 4-3 loss by the Falcons this season.
The Falcons, 11-10 overall and 0-4 in Mountain West Conference action, captured the doubles point by winning the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles contests. Senior Brooke Parsons and sophomore Laura Nigro combined to win the No. 1 match, 8-2, over UNLV's Paulina Janus and Aga Abram, while senior Ashley Gee and junior Kelli O'Bryant defeated Tracie Chong amd Amy Hadziosmanovic, 8-6, at the No. 3 slot. UNLV's No. 2 duo of Marianne Bakken and Gyorgyi Zsiros beat AFA's Heather Shelby and Gina Black, 8-3.
Air Force got off to a great start in singles action as well, as Parsons hung on to defeat Janus, the nation's 84th-ranked player, 6-3, 7-6. Gee also won for the Falcons, defeating Hadziosmanovic, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Zsiros (No. 2) and Bakken (No. 5) posted straight-set victories over Shelby and Black, respectively, to give UNLV its first two singles victories, and Chong beat O'Bryant, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 4 slot, to even the team match at 3-all. Abram and Nigro played a tough three-setter, with Abram coming from behind to win, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and give UNLV (16-3, 5-1 MWC) the victory.
The Falcons continue MWC play on Sunday, April 7, with a match against San Diego State. UNLV will battle New Mexico at the Academy as well. Both matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m., weather permitting.
