The Air Force women's volleyball team opened the season with consecutive losses. The Falcons fell 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-24) to Southern Illinois in the opening match of the Bobcat Classic. Later in the day, the Falcons lost 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-23) to North Texas in a hard-fought match.
Against Southern Illinois, Air Force notched a .233 hitting percentage, finishing the match with 40 kills and just 16 errors on 103 total attacks. Delavane Diaz led the attack with 13 kills, followed by Tiffany Bishop with eight kills and Lamecca Jefferson with seven. Diaz and Beatty each had a team-high seven digs and Bishop had a match-high three blocks.
Despite the strong play by the Falcons, the Salukis' offense dominated the match. Southern Illinois had a .413 hitting percentage, and hit a remarkable .471 in game two of the match. Lindsey Schultz led all hitters with 16 kills and Kristie Kemner had a match-high 16 digs.
The Falcons regrouped and prepared to face North Texas in the afternoon match of the tournament. A late surge in game one allowed the Falcons to close a seven-point late in the game and tie the score at 28 apiece. The Mean Green would score the final two points to earn the win. It looked as though the Falcons would earn their first game win of the season in game two, as they took a five-point lead late in the game. North Texas would out-score the Falcons 15-4 to win the game. They carried their momentum into game three, winning the final game with ease.
Four Falcons finished in double figures in kills. Diaz led the team with 13 kills, followed by Jefferson at 11. Bishop had 10 kills, as did freshman Kristen Hamlett, who made her first career start for the Falcons. Huitt led the team with 33 assists and 13 digs. Diaz added 12 digs for the first double double of the season.
Air Force will play their next two tournament matches on August 31 against Mississippi State (1:30 p.m. CST) and tournament host Southwest Texas State (7 p.m.).
