Denver defeats Air Force, 6-1

Air Force opened its 2003 spring season with a 6-1 home loss Saturday to the University of Denver. The Pioneers won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests.
DU took an early 1-0 lead by winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Yannick Dullens and Suzie Maksovic took the No. 1 match over AFA's Laura Nigro and Gina Black, 8-4, while DU's Barb Kourim and Beth Messaros beat Kelli O'Bryant and Miclynn Crail at No. 3. The Falcons No. 2 duo of Heather Shelby and Katherine Bushey beat Steph Ginsburg and Jenny Trettin, 8-6.
In singles action, DU's Dullens defeated Nigro in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 1 slot. Shelby got some revenge for Air Force as she beat Trettin, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 at the No. 2 position. DU then won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
The Falcons host the University of Colorado next Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12 p.m., followed by a home match against Division II foe University of Southern Colorado on the same day at 4:30 p.m.
