The boxing team came away with just two victories out of seven bouts at the Reno Invitational last Saturday. This first intercollegiate boxing card of the new year featured boxers from Nevada, UNLV and Cal-Berkeley. The Falcons lone wins were by C4C Luis Pena in the 135-pound division and C3C Adam Vance in the 156-pound class.
Vance stopped Nevada's Keisi Sakakihara in the third round to earn the victory. "The bout was close going into the final round with both boxers landing good combinations," said Falcon head coach Eddie Weichers, Jr. "Vance scored a standing eight count in the third when he hit Sakakihara with a good right and moments later he scored again with a hard combo that staggered the Nevada boxer causing the referee to stop the bout."
Pena went up against Nevada's Pat Wabble who towered over Pena. "Pena used a good jab to get inside his taller opponent and used good combinations to the body which slowed Wabble," said Weichers. "By the third round, Pena's jab gave Wabble a bloody nose and the Nevada boxer just ran out of gas."
Pena's winning effort earned him Boxer of the Week honors in a vote by the Falcon coaching staff. Next up for the Air Force boxers is Friday bouts scheduled for Feb. 13 in the upper boxing room.
