Randy Poggio had a goal and an assist to lead the San Jose State men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Spartan Soccer Field.
After a closely played first half, San Jose State scored the initial goal with just two seconds remaining in the half. Andres Flores took the shot from 20 yards out in the front of the box and beat Air Force goalie Brian Dougal. Poggio assisted on the play. The Falcons did threaten on the ensuing kickoff as sophomore Daniel Wasson shot the ball directly on goal, but Spartan goalie Tyler Tratten made one of his seven saves of the match.
The Spartans' two second-half goals came within 18 seconds of each other. Chris Mackey scored on a penalty kick at 75:25 after Poggio was taken down in the box by the Falcons goalie Brian Dougal. Dougal was given a yellow card on the play. Poggio then scored the final goal of the game at 75:43 after receiving a midfield pass from Jose Flores.
Dougal made five saves for the Falcons, while Tratten recorded his first collegiate shutout with the victory. It was a very physical match with 27 fouls between the two teams. There were five yellow cards given, as well as one red card on the Air Force bench.
San Jose State improves to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the MPSF, while Air Force falls to 7-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF. The Falcons will host New Mexico on Friday, October 24 at 6:30 p.m.
