The Air Force rifle defeated Texas Christian University, 6047-5754, at TCU Saturday, Oct. 25, improving to 1-2 on the season. This was the first in a series of matches over the next three weeks for the Falcons. Air finished with a score of 4570 in smallbore to TCU's 4256. In air rifle, the Falcons shot a 1498 and TCU finished with a 1477.
Highlights for the weekend included sophomore Chris Hill once again firing a perfect score in the prone position and setting a personal best in the standing position with a 384 out of 400. His combined total was a personal best (second personal record in a row) 1173 out of 1200. The 1173 was only five points lower than the school record of 1178 shot by Robin Orth, USAFA class of '96. Second place on the team in smallbore was junior Matt Colvin with an 1139 out of 1200.
"Team performance in smallbore was still a little lower than expected but a lot more consistent than it was two weeks ago," said head coach Capt. Justin Broughton. "The team has focused primarily on smallbore the last two weeks as air rifle will be the easier discipline to work up to NCAA Championship levels. Air rifle scores were very low and that was to be expected to some extent as most of the team training time had been dedicated to the smallbore event."
Broughton added, "With 75 percent of the match score coming from smallbore, we chose to win back those points before moving on the other gun. The team high in air rifle was 378 out of 400 by team captain Jason Waldow."
The weekend was a quick one-day competition as the team traveled back to USAFA on Sunday. Preparations begin Monday to host the University of Nevada, Reno at USAFA Nov. 1-2.
"This will be our toughest competition requiring near personal bests by every shooter on the team to win the match," said Broughton. "Reno is one of the top-ranked teams in the nation and a top contender in the air rifle event. Team focus will be on air rifle trying to get the team score back in to the 1530s out of 1600."
Following the shoot with Reno, Air Force takes on Army, Navy and Coast Guard at Annapolis, MD for the Presidents Cup (All-Service Academies Match).
