The Air Force volleyball team dropped its second consecutive conference match, falling to Utah 3-0 (23-30, 18-30, 22-30) Saturday at the Cadet East Gymnasium. The Utes used a height advantage to keep the Falcons off balance, as Air Force falls to 10-6 overall (1-2 MWC). The Utes are 9-6 overall (3-1 MWC). \
"Utah came in prepared," Penny Lucas-White said. "Although we lost, we were able to work on character, tenacity and perseverance. We will be ready for our next two matches."
The Falcons, who have never defeated the Utes in 11 matches, struggled from the outset. The team notched a .184 hitting percentage (37k-19e-98a). With the exception of setter Kristin Huitt who had 33 assists, noo player finished the match in double figures in any category. Delavane Diaz led all Falcon hitters with nine kills, while Lamecca Jefferson chipped in seven kills and Molly White and Kristin Hamlett each had six. Diaz also had nine digs for the match.
The Utah offensive attack was explosive. The team finished the match with a .424 hitting percentage (55k-13e-99a). Four players finished the match hitting over .500, including Shelly Sommerfeldt, who had 16 kills to lead all hitters, and Kim Turner, who hit a match-high .619 percent. Turner notched 14 kills and four digs for the Utes.
Air Force will go on the road to take on UNLV (Oct. 9) and San Diego State (Oct. 11) in two crucial MWC matches.
