Falcons Fall To BYU, 2-0, At MWC Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - Second-seeded BYU scored a pair of goals to down seventh-seeded Air Force, 2-0, in the opening match of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. With the loss, the Falcons were eliminated from the tourney and conclude their season with a 7-11-1 overall record and 1-5-0 mark in MWC play.
BYU (13-5-2, 4-2-0 MWC), who improved to 9-0 all-time in the MWC Tournament, got on the scoreboard in the 13th-minute on a header from Lydia Okuja to take a 1-0 lead. Krissa Campbell and Aleisha Rose assisted on the goal.
The Cougars added an insurance goal in the 54th -minute when Campbell scored off passes from Okuja and Jaime Rendich.
BYU dominated the entire match, out-shooting Air Force 14-3. Cougar goalkeeper Ashley Smith recorded the shutout for the Cougars with two saves. J.J. Wolf recorded three saves in 71 minutes in front of the net for the Falcons. Jennifer Munson played the final 19 minutes and did not allow a goal.
Due to weeklong heavy snowfall in the Utah region, the game was played at Rice-Eccles Stadium and began at 11:00 a.m. The game was originally slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Ute Field.
Five Air Force players, four seniors-Marci Freund (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Jennifer Monson (Anaheim, Calif.), Leigh-Anne Withers (Montclair, Va.) and J.J. Wolf (Lakewood, Wash.), and one junior-Day (Mansfield, Texas)-played in their final collegiate soccer match.
