Air Force junior defensive end Ryan Carter has been named to the second-team Academic All-American squad by the College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA). Carter is the Academy's first football Academic All-American since Dustin Tyner in 1996. He is the 11th selection in the Fisher DeBerry era.
Carter has a 3.63 grade point average and is majoring in astronautical engineering. He has been a member of the superintendent's list for military, academic and athletic excellence. Carter is the president of the USAFA chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also spent part of last summer as a mission support group commander at the Academy and commanded the student training squadron for summer projects. He was also selected by the Academy to take part in summer research project researching and developing motor casings for the rocket program.
On the field, Carter played in all 12 games and recorded 39 total tackles, including 14 unassisted. He has 5.5 tackles for loss for 18 yards and 1.5 quarterback sacks for 10 yards. He also tied for the team lead in blocked kicks with two.
"Ryan is a shinning example of the kind of young people the Academy produces year in and year out," DeBerry said. "We're very proud of what he's accomplished on and off the field. He's shown great dedication to the Academy and the football program."
Carter is one of three players from the Mountain West Conference selected, joining Morgan Scalley of Utah and Eric Pauly of Colorado State.
