Falcons Split Two Matches in Texas

The Air Force women's tennis team split a pair of matches last weekend in Texas. The Falcons dropped a 5-2 decision to Texas-San Antonio on Saturday, then rebounded to beat No. 70 Texas Tech, 5-2, on Sunday. Both matches were played at the Lubbock Country Club.

On Saturday, UT-San Antonio jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Roadrunners won at No. 1 doubles, while the Falcons took the No. 2 match. UTSA earned the doubles point as Kateryna Romanenko and Chantal Lesaar edged AFA's Laura Nigro and Gina Black, 9-7, at the No. 3 spot.

Nigro and Black posted the only singles victories for Air Force. Nigro beat Lesaar, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 singles position, while Black defeated Barbara Mooney, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5. UTSA won the other four singles matches in straight sets.

The Falcons came back strong on Sunday to defeat the Red Raiders for the second consecutive year. Tech began the match by sweeping all three doubles contests, but the Falcons held tough and won five of the six singles matches.

Nigro got things rolling for Air Force with a thrilling 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles over TTU's Irina Tereschenko. Heather Shelby followed suit, winning the No. 2 match in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, over Beverly Dawson. Katherine Bushey (No. 3), Kelli O'Bryant (No. 4) and Black (No. 5) all won in straight sets as the Falcons improved to 2-3 this season.

Air Force continues on the road this weekend with three matches in New York. The annual Gideon Cup match against Army is on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. EST at West Point. The Falcons are searching for their third consecutive win in the series with Army. AFA also plays Rutgers on Saturday at 2 p.m., then battles Columbia on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m.
