AFA Fencer Makes USA World Junior Team

Air Force fencer Tim French, a freshman from Austin, Texas, finished 34th in men's epee last week at the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs. French will compete at the USA Junior World Championships, which will be held in Trapani, Italy, April 5-13, 2003. French will compete as an individual April 11 and with the Junior World team, April 13.
Throughout the 2002-2003 fencing season, French has accumulated a total of 2,207 points from his North American Cup Division I and junior competitions. He is currently ranked third in the men's epee standings, which earned him a spot on the 2003 USA Junior World Team.
Last week, French and four teammates, C4Cs Caitlin Harris, Nick Mosca, Alison Freiman and Sam Bartron competed in the Junior Olympics. In the junior men's epee competition, French finished 34th out of 178. Mosca finished 34th of 220 competitors in men's foil, while Bartron finished 50th of 113 in men's sabre. Frieman took 54th of 96 women in the junior women's sabre competition. Harris was AFA's top finisher, placing 19th among 112 competitors in the junior women's epee competition.
In March, French and the Air Force Academy fencing teams will compete in the Western Regionals in San Diego, Calif., March 1-2. The Academy will host the NCAA Division I Fencing Championships, March 20-23 and the final NAC Division I competition of the season will take place April 25-28 in Overland Park, Kan.
