The Mountain West Conference released the 2003 Air Force football schedule today.
The 12-game regular season schedule is highlighted by one national television game. The Colorado State game on Oct. 16 in Fort Collins, Colo., will be broadcast nationally on ESPN or ESPN2 for the seventh consecutive season and will be played at night for the eighth straight year. The Thursday assignment is the fifth in AFA history and third consecutive in the AF-CSU series. The Falcons are 1-3 in the previous four Thursday night games vs. Colorado State.
The remainder of the MWC schedule features homes games against Wyoming Sept. 20, UNLV Oct. 11 and Utah Nov. 1. The Falcons' road games in the league in addition to the Colorado State game include Brigham Young Sept. 27, New Mexico Nov. 15 and San Diego State Nov. 22.
The non-conference schedule opens with the traditional parent's weekend game on Aug. 30. This season the Falcons host Wofford College, the alma mater of head coach Fisher DeBerry. Air Force also plays at Northwestern Sept. 6 and at home Sept. 13 vs. North Texas. The Falcons also play traditional service academy rivals Army and Navy. Air Force plays Navy at Federal Express Field in Washington, D.C., for the third time Oct. 4. The Falcons host Army Nov 8 in Falcon Stadium.
The schedule features three bowl teams from a year ago. Colorado State (Liberty), New Mexico (Las Vegas) and North Texas (New Orleans) all played in post-season bowl games in 2002. Air Force holds the series lead against nine of the opponents. Brigham Young is the only opponent with a series edge. Air Force plays Wofford and North Texas for the first time in school history.
Air Force's open date comes later this season. The team will have an open date on Oct. 25. The previous two seasons the open date has come in September. The remainder of the television schedule will be released at a later date by the conference.
