For the third straight game, the University of New Mexico faced an early deficit during its home stand with Air Force. And for the third straight time the Lobos roared back for a 6-4 win over the Falcons to sweep the three-game Mountain West Conference series, Sunday, Mar., 2, at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Falcons (6-8 overall, 0-3 Mountain West Conference) held a 4-1 lead as the Lobos (10-6, 3-0 MWC) came up to bat in the seventh inning. The Lobos put up three runs, and then added two more in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
The Lobos were aided by a nearly flawless bullpen performance. After starter Chad Giannetti worked the first five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, four different Lobo relievers no-hit the Falcons the rest of the way.
The Lobos were also helped by senior shortstop Dusty Young, who was 3-for-4 on the day with a run and an RBI. Sean Murray had a hit on the day, along with two RBI, to extend his hitting streak to 12-straight games.
Darren Coltrinari (1-1) got the win for New Mexico while Matt Bullen earned his second save of the year. Josh Zumbrun (1-1) was tagged for the loss.
The Falcons scored a run in the top of the second inning and put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth, propelled by an RBI single by Derck Kasel and a two-run single to center field by right fielder Mike Rose.
In the three-run seventh for the Lobos, back-to-back RBI doubles by both Josh Jezek and Young, followed by Murray's RBI single through the right side, accounted for the runs. In the eighth, Cory Lizarraga doubled home Joe Salas and Josh Mader followed with a run to make the score 6-4.
Rose led Air Force batters, going 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI.
Air Force returns home for a three-game, non-conference series against Monmouth University, Sat.-Mon., Mar. 8-10, at the Academy's Falcon Field.
