The Air Force women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches Thursday with a 7-2 victory over NAIA opponent Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. Air Force improves to 10-6 this season, while Point Loma, ranked No. 4 in the country for NAIA, falls to 8-2.
The Falcons took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Laura Nigro and Gina Black took the No. 1 match over the sister team of Anna and Anita Sieczka, 8-3. Seniors Heather Shelby and Kelli O'Bryant followed suit at No. 2, winning 8-2, while AFA's No. 3 pair of Jen Nigro and Katie Tomkie held of PLNU's Diane Sonoff and Amanda Miller, 9-8.
Anna Sieczka of Point Loma captured the No. 1 singles match, defeating AFA's Laura Nigro, 6-1, 6-0, while Point Loma also captured the No. 3 match as Anita Sieczka beat O'Bryant, 6-4, 6-2. Shelby (No. 2), Tomkie (No. 5) and Jen Nigro (No. 6) all won in straight sets, while Black and Andrea Montoya had the best singles match of the day at the No. 5 spot, with Black coming from behind to win 5-7, 7-5, 10-6.
The Falcons open Mountain West Conference play on Friday, March 21against 29th-ranked San Diego State beginning at 2 p.m.
