Air Force Defeats North Texas and Southern Utah

The Air Force women's tennis team improved to 7-6 this season with a pair of 6-1 victories Saturday over North Texas and Southern Utah at the Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Courts.
The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead over North Texas by sweeping the three doubles matches. Laura Nigro and Gina Black took the No. 1 match over Bettina Bettenmaier and Sandhya Kanury, 8-1. Heather Shelby and Kat Bushey followed suit at No. 2, winning 8-4 over Ashley Sammis and Kristin Beedy, while AFA's No. 3 pair of Kelli O'Bryant and Jen Nigro won their match, 9-7. Air Force captured the first five singles matches in straight sets, led by Laura Nigro, who beat Kanury, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Shelby beat Cristin Sammis, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, while Bushey defeated Natalie Clore, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3. O'Bryant took three sets to beat Ashley Sammis, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 and Black was victorious, 7-6, 6-4 over Beedy at No. 5. Benita Bittner claimed the only victory for North Texas, a 6-1, 6-2 win a t No. 6 over AFA's Katie Tomkie.
The Falcons kept rolling in the late match against Southern Utah. Air Force won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to win the double point. SouthernUtah had to default No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Shelby moved up to the No. 1 spot and defeated Andee Durrant, 6-1, 6-3. Bushey (No. 2), Black (No. 3) and Tomkie (No. 4) all won in straight sets. Crystal Holt notched Southern Utah's lone victory at No. 5, defeating Mariko Essanason, 7-5, 1-6, 10-5.
The Falcons host two more matches on Sunday, against Idaho State at 11a.m., and UT-Pan American at 5 p.m.
