CSU edges Falcons, 4-3

The Air Force women's tennis came up just short of winning its second consecutive Mountain West Conference match Saturday as the Colorado State Rams edged the Falcons, 4-3, at the Academy's Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Courts.
The Falcons started strong, taking two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Laura Nigro and Gina Black defeated Sanja Hansson and Dasha Zhurin, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, while AFA's No. 2 team of Heather Shelby and Kat Bushey beat Tanya Ugorich and Carla Pallares by the same score. CSU's No. 3 duo of Alex Pagnetti and Jesse Jones beat Kelli O'Bryant and Jen Nigro, 8-3.
CSU came back strong in singles, winning four of the six matches, including the top two singles contests. Hansson defeated Laura Nigro at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, and Zhurin topped Shelby, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Bushey tied the team match at 2-all with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Pagnetti at No. 3.
O'Bryant and Pallares had the best match of the day at No. 4 singles, with Pallares winning the only three-set match of the dual, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Black defeated Jones at No. 5, 7-5, 6-2, but Ugorich clinched the match for CSU with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Katie Tomkie at the No. 6 spot.
The Falcons (11-11, 1-5 MWC) play their final MWC match of the year against Wyoming on Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m. Air Force will battle Division II Colorado Christian immediately following the Wyoming match.
