Ending a 25-year broadcast career, former Air Force football coach Ben Martin recently announced that he is retiring from the Academy's football radio broadcast team. Martin was the lead analyst for the broadcast for the last 16 seasons.
"This is a sad time for the Academy," said Air Force Director of Athletics Col. Randy Spetman. "Ben's service to the Falcon Football Family was invaluable. When the Academy brought him on as the radio analyst he brought instant credibility with him after a very distinguished television broadcast career. We're grateful for everything that Coach Martin has done for the program. You don't replace a warrior like Ben Martin; you just try to go on without him."
Known as the "Father of Air Force Football," Martin coached at Air Force from 1958-77 and compiled a 96-103-9 career record. His 20-year tenure matches current head coach Fisher DeBerry's as the longest in the football program's history. Martin led the Falcons to their only undefeated season in 1958 with a 9-0-2 record and a berth in the Cotton Bowl. Air Force's only other New Year's Day bowl game appearance also came from a Martin-coached team when the 1970 squad played in the Sugar Bowl.
