The Falcons will travel to Lincoln to compete in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 20. The event will take place at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. The women's 6,000-meter race starts at 10:00 a.m., the men's 8,000m will follow at 10:45. The Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational is in its 14th year. The meet features seven teams competing in the university division: Air Force, Creighton, Drake (women only), Nebraska, Northern Colorado, Wichita State and Wyoming.
Head coach Mark Stanforth expects returning letterwinners C1C Ben Payne, Chris Acs and Anne Chumlea to be the AFA leaders in this race. "I think the men will win this race if we run like I think we will," said Stanforth. "Several of the women have been sick so their performance is a little more unpredictable."
This is the teams' first race of the season; the Aug. 29 Air Force Open was cancelled due to the weather. Most of the Mountain West Conference and regional teams already have two or three races under their belts. This late start could have an effect on the Falcons' performance. "We probably are not as "race ready" as most teams at this point in the season; however, in the long term, six weeks of training without being concerned with a race will be to our benefit," Stanforth said.
