The Southwest Missouri State men's soccer team became the first team this season to stop Air Force from scoring, defeating the Falcons 1-0 Sunday in a defensive battle at Springfield, Mo.
Air Force, which scored 15 goals in its first three games of the season, falls to 2-2 this season, while SMS improves to 2-0.
Doug Lascody scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute, beating Falcon goalie Mike Maynard, who has been in the net for both of Air Force's losses this year. Maynard made four saves, while the Bears' Matt Pickens saved all three Air Force shots.
The Bears held a 16-8 total shots advantage, and had eight corner kicks compared to four for the Falcons. Senior Casey Chronister and sophomores Daniel Wasson and Todd Myers each had a shot on goal for Air Force. Lascody had three of SMS's five shots on goal.
Air Force returns to the field next Friday, Sept. 12 at the John Byrden Classic hosted by the University of Denver. The Falcons will face New Hampshire in the tournament's first game at 1:30 p.m., then battle Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m.
