"Sophomore Alison Freiman, freshmen Katie Gulczynski, C.J. Baran, and Sean Andrews were eliminated early in their respective junior events, but each of them demonstrated potential for improvement." Coach Abdel Salem said.
Gulczynski tied for 62nd, while Freiman finished 53rd out of 65 in the women's junior saber event.
"It was great to see some really good fencers. Competing against them gave me the chance to understand a lot of the things that we have been learning in practice. I know now that I need to work on my movement and aggressiveness." Gulczynski said.
"As expected, San Jose was a very strong event for both Senior and Junior competition. Our fencers are inexperienced, and for many of them this was there first national competition." Salem said.
Four cadets from the women's fencing team, Kate Strickland, Monica Herrera, Lydia Bigelow, and Natalie Chounet will be returning to San Jose Jan. 16-18 to compete in women's junior foil and epee.
Former AFA fencer, 2nd Lt. Seth Kelsey, class of 2003, was the men's epee champion. Kelsey is ranked No. 1 in men's epee and is currently training in the Air Force's World Class Athlete Program.
