Las Vegas, Nev. - The Air Force men's swim team defeated UNLV, 126-155, to win its Mountain West Conference dual meet-opener, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Buchanan Natatorium on the UNLV campus. The win improves the Falcons to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference meets.
AFA took first in nine of the 13 meet events, led by freshman Chris Knaute. Knaute dominated the meet by taking first place in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:44.15), the 200 free (1:41.98) and the 500 free (4:36.12).
First place finishes for the Falcons also came from seniors Eric Pounds and Paul Brehm and freshman Justin Lapin. Pounds won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.96, while Brehm was victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.82, and Lapin won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.37.
Senior Ben Chapman won both diving events for the Falcons, taking first in the one-meter dive with 274.27 points and the three-meter dive with 236.92 points. The Falcons took first through third in the one meter diving, with senior Doug Hulse following Chapman up by taking second (236.92) and freshman Daniel Phenicie finishing third (188.40).
AFA returns to action Thursday, Jan. 22, playing host to BYU in a MWC dual meet along with the Falcon women's team. The meet begins at 5 p.m. MST.
