Falcons Finish Competition at Rocky Mountain Shootout

BOULDER, Colo. - Several members of the Air Force cross country team competed at the 2004 Rocky Mountain Shootout, hosted by the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday, Oct. 2. The men's team finished third in the Division-I race, while the women competed individually.
With 63 points, the men finished just one point shy of second-place Wyoming (62 points). Host Colorado won the event with 15 points.
Josh Van Wyngaarden (La Vista, Neb.) was the top Falcon finisher, clocking a time of 27:58 in the 8K race to finish 33rd. Dan DeRusha (Milford, Mich.) was close behind, with a 40th-place finish in 28:16.
Calvin Glass (Antelope, Calif.) finished 55th, with a time of 28:28, while Ian McFarland (West Plains, Mo.) and Kenny Grosselin (Ramstein Air Base, Germany) tagged respective times of 29:19 (64th) and 29:28 (67th).
Jared Graham (Blue Spring, Mo.), Cory Pilinko and Jodan Hughes were all within five spots of one another -- Graham crossed the finish line in 79th (29:51), Pilinko was 81st (29:56) and Hughes finished 83rd (30:07). Chad Murray (Highland, Mich.) rounded out the Air Force contingent with a 97th-place finish and a time of 31:18.
Four of the freshman women competed individually for the Falcons in Bolder. Katie Surhoff, who recorded a 59th-place finish with a time of 25:30. Candice Killian and Kasey Wilson finished 73rd and 74th, with respective times of 26:32 and 26:37. Amanda Lopez rounded out the women's competitors with a time of 27:57 to finish 85th.
The Falcons return to action next Saturday (Oct. 9) when they travel to the Fort Hays Invitational in Hays, Kansas.
