Falcons Conclude Competition at Air Force Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force cross country team concluded the regular season at the Air Force Open on Saturday (Oct. 23) at North Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. The Falcons had 11 men and four women compete in the non-scoring race with athletes from Colorado and UC-Colorado Springs.
Senior Derek Storbeck was the top Falcon finisher, claiming second with a time of 26:55. Classmate Kyle Davison joined Storbeck in the top-five, with a fourth-time of 26:58. Three other Air Force runners -- Richard Elmore (seventh-27:29), Jason Beck (ninth-28:11) and Dan DeRusha (10th-28:20) -- also finished among the top-10.
Six Falcon freshmen also competed in the final meet of the regular season. Josh Van Wyngaarden (29:12), Ian McFarland (29:43), Kenny Grosselin (30:17), Jared Graham (30:23) and Chad Murray finished 14th through 18th, respectively, while Jordan Hughes rounded out the contingent with a 20th-place time of 32:09.
Kasey Wilson led the four members of the women's team with a fifth-place time of 25:32, while Kate Papenburg placed sixth in 25:54. Candice Killian and Katie Suhrhoff finished ninth and 10th, with respective times of 27:34 and 28:14.
The Falcons begin post-season competition on Saturday (Oct. 30), when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for the 2004 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships. The women's race begins at 9 a.m. (PST), while the men look to defend their conference title at 10 a.m. (PST).
