Falcon Men Take Second at MWC Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Air Force men's cross country took second at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 30. All five of the Falcons' scoring runners finished within the top-16, while all seven athletes finished among the top-30. On the women's side, the Falcons finished fifth.
The Falcons tallied 57 points to finish just behind BYU (39 points). Despite taking the top-two spots in the race, New Mexico finished third with 69 points and Colorado State took fourth with 75 points. Utah (127 points) and Wyoming (174 points) rounded out the competition, taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
Senior co-captain Abe Wengel (Menomonie, Wis.) was the top Falcon finisher with an eighth-place time of 25:28. Fellow captain Brian Dumm (Fairfax, Va.) was right on his heels with a ninth-place time of 25:29. Junior Mark Walter (League City, Texas) finished 13th, with a time of 25:35, while classmate Nick Wilson (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed 11th with a time of 25:35. Jeff Gosselin (Cornelius, N.C.) rounded out the Air Force scorers with a 16th-place finish of 25:37. Matt Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) and Travis Patterson (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished 18th and 29th, with respective times of 25:57 and 26:36, while Anthony D'Amato (Midlothian, Va.) and Kalib Wilkinson (Huntersville, N.C.) recorded times of 26:41 (31st) and 26:50 (32nd).
The Falcon women placed fifth with 121 points - just three points shy of fourth-place Utah. BYU picked up its sixth straight title with 24 points, while Colorado State (59 points) and Wyoming 97 points) rounded out the top three. New Mexico finished sixth with 163 points, while San Diego State (192 points) and UNLV (224 points) concluded the eight-team competition.
Freshman Kelly Robinson (Holt, Mich.) led the Falcons with a 13th-place finish and a time of 22:54. Junior Lindsay Grose (Mission Viejo, Calif.) placed 22nd, with a time of 23:25, while sophomores Ashley Snyder (Pickerington, Ohio) and Ashley Culp (West Des Moines, Iowa) finished 27th and 28th, with respective times of 23:36 and 23:38. Freshman Kristin Trichler (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was the final scoring Falcon with a 31st-place finish of 23:57. Junior Andrea Pinchak (Shaker Heights, Ohio) matched that time to finish 32nd, while sophomore Elizabeth Catherwood (Bethesda, Md.) finished 34th, with a time of 24:02.
The Falcons are off from competition until Saturday, Nov. 13, when they travel north to Fort Collins, Colo., for the NCAA Mountain Region Championships.
