Air Force head football coach Fisher DeBerry was recently inducted into the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Hall of Champions. DeBerry joins a group of men and women widely known for their achievements on and off the field. Current inductees include legends such as Tom Landry, Bobby Richardson, Kay Yow and Branch Rickey. Along with DeBerry, this year's class includes Otto Graham, football coach Jim Rexilius and two-time PGA champion Larry Nelson.
DeBerry's involvement in the FCA is extensive. He has served as a speaker at various FCA coaches' events, including clinics and conventions, and also participates at annual ministry Game Day events at the Academy. On a national level, DeBerry also has served on the FCA's National Board of Advisors.
"Coach DeBerry and his staff have been a God-send for myself and the ministry," said Colorado FCA Coaches Ministry Director Rod Olson. "It's a blessing to be able to tell coaches around the state about a man like Fisher and how he is committed to coaching for the glory of God."
DeBerry is a 1960 graduate of Wofford College (S.C.) where he lettered in football and baseball. Following a high school coaching and teaching career, DeBerry returned to Wofford to coach for two years. He then went to Appalachian State for nine years before coming to the Academy in 1980 as an assistant. DeBerry became the head coach at Air Force in 1984 and is currently in his 21st season. He has led the Falcons to a 158-91-1 career record and is the winningest service academy football coach. He has led the Falcons to 12 post-season bowl games and 14 of the school's 16 Commander-in-Chief's trophy titles.
