Falcons Take Three From Kentucky
11/16/2004 12:00:00 AM | Boxing
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Joe Conrad, James Baker and Blake Baldi picked up victories for the Air Force boxing team, who went 3-6 to Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Louisville, Ky. Following his decision in the 139-pound bout, Baker was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Baker earned a hard-fought decision over Kentucky's Chad Kauffman at 139 pounds. Although Kauffman tied Baker up whenever he got inside during the early rounds, the Falcons' junior was able to create punching distance in the third and take the decision.
Joe Conrad and Blake Bladi were also able to come away with victories, as Conrad earned a decision over Miami-Ohio's Mike Reamer in the 175-pound bout and Baldi defeated Kentucky's Robert Browning at 154 pounds when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
Lonnie Ash (145-lbs.) and Sean Mitchell (190-lbs.) both lost close decisions, while Chris Collins' 195-pound bout was stopped due to a severe nose bleed. Austin Street (156-lbs.) and Oscar Casillas (195-lbs.) also lost decisions, while Colt Schiefelbein's bout (147-lbs.) was called in the first round.
"We got out of the blocks fast," Air Force head coach Eddie Weichers said. "But we lost some momentum, losing the last six matches."
The Falcons wrap up a stretch of four consecutive road contests on Monday, Nov. 22. Air Force will take on other programs from the National Collegiate Boxing Association at the New York Athletic Club in New York City. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. (EST).
