Falcons Defeat CSU-Pueblo, Fall to Missouri

The Air Force women's tennis team split a pair of home matches Sunday at the Academy. The Falcons lost their first match of the day to 40th-ranked Missouri, 7-0, then defeated Division II foe CSU-Pueblo, 7-0.
Seniors Laura Nigro and Gina Black pulled off a great win at No. 1 doubles against Missouri. They defeated Urska Juric and Katka Sevikova, the 30th-ranked doubles team in the country, 8-4. Juric and Sevikova have been ranked as high as No. 9 this season. The Tigers won the doubles point by winning the other two doubles matches as Hana Kraftova and Lucie Ruskova defeated the Falcon duo of Kat Bushey and Karissa Walker, 8-1 at No. 2, while Erika Josbena and Mary Rebecca Barry beat Kellie Crail and Liza Vaccaro, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.
"That was a huge win by Laura and Gina," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "The Missouri team was ranked No. 4 in the country most of last season and advanced to the ITA National Indoor semifinals. It was probably our biggest doubles win since we moved to Division I in 1996."
Missouri then cruised through the six singles matches, winning all of them in straight sets. The closest match came at No. 5 singles where Barry defeated AFA's Katie Tomkie, 7-6, 6-3. Juric, ranked No. 30 in the nation, started it all with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nigro.
The Falcons did not have much trouble at all with CSU-Pueblo Sunday afternoon. Air Force swept through the three doubles matches, giving up just three games and won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Air Force (6-4) is idle until Saturday, March 13 when it hosts Metro State College and the University of Montana at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
