MWC Track and Field Championships Underway at Air Force

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships officially got underway today (Feb. 26) and three members of the Air Force men's track and field team performed extremely well.
Senior Nick Herald (Sparks, Nev.), junior Caleb Pelger (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Brian Walsh (Redlands, Calif.) took part in the first four events of the heptathlon - the 60-meter dash, long jump and shot put.
After a month away from competition due to injury, Pelger completed the first day of competition in second-place with 2990 points. He set three personal-records and neared a fourth, while placing no lower than third in any event. Pelger finished second in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.12. He also recorded a second-place finish in the long jump. Recording a distance of 22'7?" in the long jump, Pelger bested his previous high by 8 inches. He also topped his old best mark in the shot put by two feet when he shot a 39'7?" to finish in third. Pelger topped out on the high jump at a near-best mark of 6'4?"
Herald is currently in fourth place with 2776 points, while Walsh is in ninth with 2634. Herald finished fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.20) and Walsh was seventh, crossing the finish line in 7.25. The duo tied for fourth in the long jump, each registering a distance of 21'8?". Herald and Walsh finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the high jump, with heights of 5'11?" and 5'10?". Herald finished right behind Pelger in the shot put, with a fourth-place distance of 38'8?". Walsh finished 13th, with a mark of 33'3?".
"I am very pleased with how well all three performed today," head coach Ralph Lindeman said following the meet. "After having not competed in just over a month, Caleb is doing fantastic. Nick and Brian are also doing a great job out there. They are off to a great start in this competition."
The rest of the Air Force men's and women's track and field team will start competition tomorrow, while Pelger, Herald and Walsh continue the heptathlon. The first event is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., in the Cadet Field House.
