FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Air Force track and field team continued action at the NCAA West Prelim on Thursday (May 28), with junior Liliane Aittama advancing to this weekend's regional final in the 800-meter run. Overall, seven of the Falcons' eight competitors made their West debut today in Fayetteville.
Senior India Jones, competing in the NCAA West Prelim's 10,000-meter run for the third time in as many years, placed 32nd in the regional final, behind a time of 34:21.04.
From the infield, a trio of freshmen made their regional debuts at John McDonnell Field today. Julie Segroves cleared 3.93 meters (12'10¾") to finish 33rd in the pole vault, while classmate Cadee Alder recorded a throw of 41.85 meters (137'3") to finish 46th in the javelin. Fellow freshman Max McFarlane, whose pole vault competition was rescheduled from last night due to weather, was unable to clear his opening bar at 5.07 meters (16'7½").
A quartet of juniors – also making their first appearances at the West Prelim – competed in two qualifying races this evening, with Aittama advancing to Saturday's regional final in the 800-meter run. Picking off several runners over the final 100 meters, Aittama placed third in her heat (2:04.97) to earn an automatic bid into the next round. Classmate Cam Bodine also competed in the 800-meter run, finishing 46th in her return to the track after a late-season injury (2:11.25). Elsewhere, fellow juniors Rachel Fereday and Anna Harden finished 25th (4:20.38) and 43rd (4:25.65), respectively, in the 1500-meter run
The men are back in action tomorrow (May 29) for the third day of the NCAA West Prelim. Air Force will compete in the discus throw, 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter run, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
