USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - One of six boxers from Air Force to earn a victory at the National Collegiate Boxing Association regional championships last weekend, freshman Willie Lloyd was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week on Monday, March 22.
It is the third time this season that Lloyd has earned the team's weekly honor. He is the fifth Falcon to be named Boxer of the Week on at least two occasions, but is the first to earn the honor three times.
Lloyd was named the Academy's top boxer after defeating Moon Kim of UNLV. Although Kim tried to take on the aggressor role in the first round, Lloyd was up to the challenge. Using good movement and several counters, Lloyd won the first round and slowly took control as the bout went on.
"Willie is a legitimate boxer who caught fire on Saturday night," head coach Eddie Weichers said. "Moon Kim is a veteran, but Lloyd was up to the challenge. He's a natural and took to the sport very fast. He's a fast learner and extremely coachable."
Up next for the Lloyd and the Falcons is the 2004 National Collegiate Boxing Association national championships, which will be held at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev., on April 1-3.
