LAS VEGAS, Nevada - A five run third inning led UNLV to a 13-2 win over Air Force in a Mountain West Conference baseball game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Falcons fall to 5-21 on the season and 0-5 in the MWC, while the Rebels improve to 18-7, 5-0.
Falcon starter Paul Vignola started off well but ran into trouble in the third inning surrendering five runs in the third to put the Falcons behind 5-0. Vignola, a Las Vegas native, surrendered two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, making it a 9-0 ballgame. Vignola fell to 1-5 on the season, allowing nine runs in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Falcons had opportunities to get on the scoreboard early in the game, but failed to score with the bases loaded in the first and fifth innings. Air Force also failed to score with the bases juiced in the ninth and stranded 13 baserunners on the day.
Air Force scored its first run of the game in the sixth, as Jason Brown scored on a throwing error.
UNLV starter Jake Vose improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.
The Rebels tacked on three more runs in sixth and one in the seventh off Falcon reliever Jackson Edwards to make it a 12-1 game. AFA made it 12-2 as Travis Fugler's sacrifice fly to left field scored Josh Wolfram, who doubled earlier in the inning, from third base.
The Falcon offense had seven base hits, stealing four bases. Colton Walter went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases for Air Force.
UNLV had 15 hits, with Andrew D'Angelo, Ryan Ruiz, Eric Nielsen and Eddie Gill getting two hits apiece.
Air Force and UNLV conclude the three-game series tomorrow (Sun. March 28) at 1 p.m. (PST).
Game notes: Josh Wolfram stole his 10th base of the year... Nathan DeRohan hit his 10th double of the year.
