AFA Placed 16th at the National Collegiate Fencing Championships

After four days of tough competition, the Academy's fencers placed 16th out of 33 teams in the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships held at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., this weekend. Five fencers finished in the top 25 of their respective events. Ohio State University won its first-ever NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championship followed by Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame. The Academy earned its spot at the national collegiate championships with the five fencers who qualified last week at the NCAA Western Region Championships.
Individually, AFA sophomore Sam Bartron finished 23rd in men's saber. Freshman Jason Stockdale finished 11th, while sophomore Timothy French finished 16th in men's epee. Junior Marisa Romero finished 24th in women's saber and senior Apphia Taylor finished 22nd in women's epee. This was French and Romero's second trip to the national collegiate championships. In 2003, French earned second team All-American, Romero finished 23rd. The Academy finished ninth in 2003.
