The Air Force men's tennis team opened play in the Mountain West Conference Friday with a 6-1 loss to New Mexico in Albuquerque. Junior Tyler McClung posted the only victory for Air Force, winning the No. 2 singles match over David Kowalski, 6-3, 6-2. The Falcons fell to 12-9 this season with the loss.
Air Force was forced to play without its top player, sophomore Shannon Buck, who sprained his ankle in practice earlier this week. Buck, ranked No. 58 in the country, is questionable for the Falcons' other two matches this weekend.
New Mexico jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with victories at all three doubles spots. The closest match was at the No. 3 position, where McClung teamed with freshman Ryan White, who played his first career collegiate match. The duo led most of the match against UNM's Henry Gers and Jasmin Hodzic, but the Lobo pair fought off six match points and won 9-7.
In singles action, sophomore Trevor Johnson moved up to the No. 1 spot in Buck's absence and fell 6-3, 6-1 to the nation's 27th-ranked player, Divan Coetzee. UNM easily won the other four singles matches in straight sets as the Lobos defeated Air Force for the 21st time in 23 meetings.
Air Force continues play in the Mountain West Conference against San Diego State on Saturday, April 10 and UNLV on Sunday, April 11 in Albuquerque. Both matches will begin at 10 a.m.
